Buck 65
A Nova Scotia rhymer with a voice like a country 'n' western roadhound and deliberately a unhip poet; inevitably, much has been made of the MC's confused relationship to hip-hop. This latest is "pure" hip-hop as only he could define it. Wizened indie beats and guttural, guttermouth lyrics abound.

Pitbull: ''The Boatlift'' (clean)
"Money" is a major issue," Pitbull would have you know, but that doesn't mean he's having trouble earning. The South Florida anagrammer has risen through the crunk ranks with a mix of rumbling bass, Latin lilts, and South Beach seduction that's sensual where Atlanta is brash.

Ella Fitzgerald's Christmas
You'd think Christmas ditties would be a limiting template for jazz's finest vocal improviser, but this 1967 recording sees Ella instantly put the old chestnuts on her terms. Subtly playing with rhythm, bringing an insouciance to the phrasing, Ella might be writing the tunes herself.

'The Best of Christmas Cocktails'
Who said "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" couldn't be a song for grown-ups? Midcentury mix "Christmas Cocktails" serves up the classics as something to play after the kiddies are off to bed. And if you're not going to have thirds on the eggnog, Dean Martin sure will.

Indie To Go Vol. 10 - This iPod-friendly sampler features topnotch indie newcomers and chart-toppers. Stream now (while you work), then visit the artist pages to download the songs to go.

They're jammin' - With its tasty grooves, its democratic style, and its prizing of a mellow good time, reggae has proved a natural fit for jam bands who satisfy their love of Phish and Bob Marley. Several can be found here, alongside equally jam-tastic forays into dub and jazz.

Indie Rock vs. Hip-hop - Diversity is the key to putting on a large-scale event like the Treasure Island Festival. The successful two day event went down last week featuring one day of electronica/hip-hop, and one day of indie rock. Here are (most of) the artists who appeared.

The new songwriters - The term singer/songwriter has become less defined over the years, although it still requires the ability to sing and write songs. Here's a new batch of artists who do both very well.

Hitmakers Vol. 2 - Yeah, dropping names of new artists that nobody's heard of can be fun...but we know what you really sing along to (in your car at full volume with the windows up). Features Rihanna, Fall Out Boy, The Shins and more.

Features
Christmas songs and holiday cheerHoliday planning driving you mad? Soothe your soul with the cool new sounds on our annual holiday music playlist, featuring indie-rock sensations, oddball favorites, and some old-fashioned classics, too.
Matchbox TwentyMT don't sound like the Stones on "Exile on Mainstream," but the new tracks prove they've had their ears open during their long hiatus. The Killers' arena pop is the surprise reference point on new single "How Far We've Come," though Rob Thomas' vocal ache will always be his own.
Keyshia ColeThe demure diva's new joint with Missy Elliott and Lil' Kim, Let It Go, takes us back to NYC's still-unmatched Biggie Years, bouncing on back-in-the-day beats and soul-hop style. It's a great fit for Cole, whose voice is slick enough for club rap but rewarded by more vintage settings.
Studio C: Chuck ProphetBetween producing Kelly Willis, writing songs with Dan Penn, and landing a track on a recent Heart album, Chuck Prophet has been heavily in demand lately. He stopped by Studio C to talk about his adventures and play a few songs from his brand-new album, Soap and Water.
Flo RidaSilky-voiced singers and MCs like T-Pain and Plies are returning Florida to hip-hop prominence (insert argument that it never left here). Who better to push things over the top than the eponymous Flo Rida? Flo makes South Beach proud with spit-shined synths and seductive club rhymes.
T.I.On T.I. vs. T.I.P., Clifford Harris concludes that his own alter ego is the only competition left. But as each Cliff battles the other, we're the ones who win. The record is as broad and sprawling as Atlanta itself, touching on dancehall and funk but always getting back to deep Dirty South beats.
